It’s Orchid Festival day in Tobermory and we are attending two workshops – one this morning and one this afternoon. Our first workshop is with a National Parks warden who takes us on a tour of where to find certain types of orchids this time of year.
Nodding Trillium
I didn’t even realize there was such a thing as a nodding trillium. And of course with their blooms bowed towards the earth they can be difficult to spot. Knowing what their leaves look like and where to find them certainly helps ( it’s doubtful I’ll be able to find them again without help). We made three stops this morning on our whirlwind tour with the final stop being the Singing Sands. Here our guide found a baby snake and showed off this cute little guy.

Our afternoon workshop was with a local photographer who showed us an abundance of orchids that can be found by the roadside. Every few feet you can find bunches of yellow lady slippers, a pink flower that looks like a plane and much more.
Red
I was more shocked to see that there were trees (albeit small ones) already turning red :O How can this be? It’s only May! Luckily this little maple was the only one I saw today. Plus I was distracted by more orchids.
