The Black and White Neighbourhood

Today on my neighbourhood walk, I decided to focus on photographing subjects that would look good in black and white. It had rained earlier today so things were wet and droplets were in abundance. Droplets on leaves always look fantastic in black and white, in my opinion.

On the sidewalk, I came across this leaf that was infested with eggs, or at least, I think they’re eggs. Regardless, it looked neat and it caught my attention and so the photo was taken.

Close to the end of my walk, I found this white-lipped snail having a munch on a dried leaf.

Usually I just see these little guys hanging out on stems – either snoozing or slowing making their way somewhere. This one, however, I could actually see eating, If you look hard at the photo can you “see” him eating?

Macro World on Flowerpot Island

We woke up extra early this morning to drive over to the Tobermory lighthouse and get us some sunrise photos. We were eager to see what mother nature was going to show us.

And I had a front seat to the spectacular event.

You couldn’t ask for a better morning. Temperatures were mild, the colours were on point and we had some cloud for the colours to reflect off of. Thank you Mother Nature!

After a hearty breakfast we hopped on a boat and headed over to Flowerpot Island. After such great sunrise, the clouds came in and the drizzle started, eventually turning into a more substantial rain later in the day.

We walked along the shoreline path and stopped to photograph the flowerpots before heading to the lightstation museum on the north side of the island. That’s when the rain settled in so we got into our rain gear before heading back to the trails.

Instead of hiking the shoreline around the island we decided to cut through the middle and take the trail over some more rugged terrain in the hopes of spotting the elusive Striped Coral Root orchid. It wasn’t until we reached the main trail again that we spotted the orchid. I was thankful that I had the rain gear as I was down on the ground a number of times to get photos of almost every flower we spotted.

By the time we got back to our Airbnb we were both wiped and very damp. Not to mention excited to see what we had captured. We have one more day here in Tobermory and it looked like we may have some better weather.

A Wash Out in Stanley Park?

My first full day in British Columbia began as a very wet adventure but the weather eventually turned as I made my way out of Stanley Park and off on the ferry to Nanaimo. Here is a video I put together of my day along with some of my favourite photos from the day.

Drive in the Country

It’s a misty autumn day out today and everything is still green. Temperatures have been on the warmer side so the leaves have not changed to their usual brilliant colour and this is bumming me out a little. The plan today was to drive up the old country roads and head over to Earl Rowe Provincial Park to hike one of the trails. Mother Nature, however, had different plans.

When I arrived at the park the clouds broke and the rain poured out. That was enough to say no to the long hike I had intended to do. Instead I headed back to a more sheltered area to grab some photos there. The rain let up a bit but eventually I decided to drive back home and see what I could find along the way. It wasn’t long before I pulled over so I could take a photo of an old shed with a small pond in front.

The rain had stopped at this point but a mist still hung in the air. Everything was so still and peaceful. Back in the car it wasn’t long before I pulled over again. This time for a fence with a vine that had actually turned to a brilliant red. A hint of autumn!

The great thing about getting out to photograph in the rain is the colours, they are much more vibrant when wet. Of course, its much more comfortable when its dry out. 🙂
