Yesterday I left for a two week vacation to Croatia, my native homeland. Taking my mom with me we made the seven hour journey to Munich with no problems and only had to wait just over an hour before boarding a plane for Zagreb. Flying over the alps is always amazing and I was lucky enough to have a window seat to enjoy the view.

Last night I spent a lot of time catching up with my cousins and aunt before heading to bed; I’d been up over 30 hours with maybe four hours of sleep. Today my mom and I both had to sign in at the police station, a policy that apparently has always been in effect but never enforced until now.

Afterwards we went for a short walk around town while my cousin did some banking. Turns out that they know how to bank – you take a number and then sit down until your number is called. Hello – Canadian banks, what are you waiting for?

This statue, near the centre of town, is an ode to all the miners that have worked in this area – one of whom was my grandfather. He’s rather imposing, is he not?
