I left the house early this morning for the drive to Zagreb airport with my mom and cousins. I was finally on my way to Dubrovnik. I boarded a slightly small propeller type plane – I believe they call them Dash 8s. It made for a very noisy but luckily short one hour flight. When I landed a driver zoomed me off to the walls of the old city. Tea, the lady whose place I would be staying at met me and took me through the streets of the city and to my apartment, which was of course was on the third floor. It was fun taking my suitcase up those narrow steps but I made it. I ended up with a lovely apartment that I wish I could have stayed in longer. After changing into much cooler clothes (it was blazing hot) I ventured out into the streets, camera in hand. There are many things to see in the old city – churches, museums and many monuments of a much older time.
After sweating it out for awhile I headed back to the apartment to change, rest and find a place to eat for the evening. One word of warning for those interested in traveling here – there are a LOT of steps. My ass will be super tight by the end of this journey. When I headed out to dinner I happened to catch the colours of the setting sun hidden behind the walls.
I took Lonely Planet’s advice and checked out their top choice for dinner here in Dubrovnik and I was not disappointed. I had the octopus in tomatoes and onion with a glass of house wine. Delicious! After dinner I headed to the cable car that takes you up to the top of Mount Srd with breathtaking views of Dubrovnik below.
Dubrovnik at night is certainly a sight to see and it’s certainly a little easier to get around once the tour groups have left for the day. My last stop was to get some photos of the Pile Gate before heading to the apartment to get some shut eye to prepare for some early morning adventures in this city.
