Roy Ramsay of Outdoor Photography Canada and I went out on a photo shoot to somewhere a little different than the normal landscape type of place. Today we decided to check out a car junkyard not to far out of the city. I’ve been to the place a few times before but never in the winter. Now, winter has been a little non-existent lately but when we called up to the place we were told there was snow on the ground – it was exactly what we wanted to hear.
My Eye on You
There were so many things of interest to capture here and a place like this can be hard to focus your intentions. For those that have been here either with me or another group, they know that this place is very big. It’s very hard to see everything but our goal today was to do just that. Roy and I went up and down the aisles of cars, backtracking when we hit dead ends until we hit the boundaries of the place. We covered a lot of territory and I still have many more photos to process.
Crispy
One of the things to decide before going into a place like this is what you want to shoot. Is it closeups of rust and paint chipping? Is it details on the car, such as headlights or interiors? or is it overall shots of the area? It really helps to have something in mind when heading to a place like this, or even when you’re out photographing landscapes. Having a plan in place will help keep you from becoming overwhelmed when there is so much in front of you. Of course, once you’ve photographed what your original goal was that means you can play and get some other types of shots.
Pontiac
Roy and I spent a good portion of the day here so I was able to get many different types of shots – closeups, single cars and wider shots of the junkyard. My favourites of the day tended toward the closeups but I do have a few overalls I’m partial to.
