I came across something new on my walk today. A very large bush is growing along the edge of the creek just behind my old elementary school. It’s currently covered in beautiful white flowers.

The bush is called a Dog Rose and it has a bit of a rich history. It’s roots, leaves, blooms and hips were once used in various prescriptions dating back to the time of Hippocrates. The British, in WWII, used the Dog Rose hips to help with vitamin C deficiency since they couldn’t import citrus fruits during that time. And now rose hips are being used in diuretics and laxatives.

Not too far away from these white blooms is another Dog Rose bush but with a very different colour.

Continuing my walk to the other side of the creek I found my yellow fluttering friends – the swallowtails.

They were less cooperative today but I was still able to get a quick shot of one of them feeding on the dame’s rocket before I headed home.
