I was visiting my friends, Brad & Tracey, for a Christmas celebration last night and on my way home this afternoon I decided to stop at a shack I discovered awhile ago. It’s my new favourite ruin up here in Grey County since the old house on highway 10 collapsed in a big storm.
Old Shack
Abandoned sheds/homes/buildings have so much more character than newer ones. It has a history to it and figuring out its story is what makes it fun to revisit time and time again.
Old Road
Before leaving Grey County I made one last stop at this old road. I don’t know where it leads.. Where do you think the road will take you?
Tonight there is no moon so my friend Nigel and I decided to jump in the car and head north to look for some stars. As we headed north towards Luther Marsh things got a little on the cloudy side but not enough to deter us.
Above the Clouds
The layer of clouds seemed to hover along the horizon so when we found ourselves a spot to view the milky way part of it was covered. Ah well. You take your chances with weather when you’re out shooting.
City Glow
That orange glow in the sky looks like a sunset but its actually the lights from the city of Orangeville located not too far away.
Look Way Up
A beautiful night out and a good start to a summer season of night photography.
This morning Nigel and I woke up to overcast skies again but this time it looked like things would clear up a little. After breakfast we packed up and checked out of the hotel – it was time to take our scenic tour from Swift Current to Regina. Our first stop was a lovely red grain mill in Ponteix.
Red Grain Elevator
Just after this the skies started clearing and we were introduced to amazing blue skies. In Patterson we stopped at a white grain mill to photograph it against the clear blue sky. You may have noticed that the grain mills all have train tracks that allow trains to pull up to the mill for easier distribution.

As we drove the backroads Saskatchewan’s famous sky was presented to us in all its glory.
Saskatchewan Skies
I do look forward to getting back here one day soon but I think this time it may have to be in slightly warmer temps, say, 20ºC or more?
The last time I drove by the ditches filled with Purple Loosestrife it was overcast and very different than today’s beautiful blue skies. That means that I must stop again for a photo op.
Bullrush & Loosestrife
As you can see there is quite a difference. In the last post the loosestrife was evenly lit while today you can see some harsh shadows. Overall I don’t mind the effect of the brighter sunlight but you have to be careful when shooting in this type of light.
One of the things about the Bruce Trail is that you never know what you will come across. Even when you’re not on the trail itself. This morning on the way to the trail I noticed something slowly shuffling along the road. As I got closer I noticed it was a snapping turtle.
Turtle on a Mission
I hoped that I could get a photo of it walking along but as soon as my car approached it and passed, it stopped and lay down. So much for that shot. I settled on getting this shot of the little guy/gal with my telephoto lens which kept me a safe distance away. Although those claws look dangerous its the mouth you have to stay away from if you want to keep your digits intact. Don’t get too close when photographing these creatures. With a telephoto lens you can stay back so as not to aggravate or stress the turtle. What an unexpected find!
